Spousal Sponsorship

Spousal Sponsorship is a pathway for individuals who are married to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to immigrate to Canada. The program also applies to common-law partners and conjugal partners. The sponsor must meet specific eligibility criteria, and the applicant must meet admissibility requirements.

There are two categories of spousal sponsorship: In-Canada and Outside of Canada Sponsorship. Inside of Canada sponsorship is when the applicant is already in Canada and is applying for permanent residency from within Canada. Outside of Canada sponsorship is when the applicant is outside of Canada, and the application is processed through the Canadian visa office in their country of residence

When sponsoring a spouse or partner for immigration, the Canadian government will assess the sponsor’s eligibility and the genuineness of the relationship. The government has specific requirements that must be met for the sponsorship to be approved. Some of the requirements include:

  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and they must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The sponsor must not be in default of any previous sponsorship obligations or have any criminal convictions.
  • The sponsor must demonstrate that they have the financial means to support their spouse or partner upon arrival in Canada.
  • The applicant must meet admissibility requirements, including medical and security checks.

In addition to meeting the eligibility and admissibility requirements, the sponsor and the applicant must provide extensive documentation to support their application. Some of the documents required include:

  • Proof of marriage or common-law relationship
  • Proof of identity
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Medical examinations
  • Proof of financial support
